Candace Parker Rejoices: Boston Celtics Sign Sheldon Williams
Tue, Aug 4, 2009 by Adam Sedie
Sheldon Williams signs with the Boston Celtics for 1 year at the league’s veteran minimum. Sheldon Williams will now be able to be this seasons version of Patrick O’Bryant.
Basically, just another high draft pick with loads of hype and with little to no results as a pro. He is a lottery pick that has done little with his NBA career after being the 8th pick in the 2006 draft. After being nothing more than below average in Atlanta, Williams has been shipped off to Sacramento and then Minnesota.
Candace Parker can rest better now that her hubby has a chance at owning a ring.
There is no chance he will actually contribute, but at least being on a championship team is better than the dumpster fire deals have landed him during his career.
Lets look at what this acquisition means for the Celtics.
THE HARSH REALITY
Williams is the luckiest man alive. He went from being a lottery pick salary (he made $3,395,760 last year) bundled in to make deals work to joining one of the top teams in the NBA.
Boston will be his fourth team going into his fourth NBA season. Can you say bust?
Another negative indicator is that the Williams meager 5.5 points a game as a rookie is his career high. His scoring average has steadily decreased.
THE POSSIBILITIES
This could be the end of Leon Powe’s time in Boston. He is still months away from being NBA ready after his season ending knee injury last year.
With their depth chart full, Boston will no longer worry whether or not Powe can regain his form with them this year. Boston can shift focus to retaining Glen “Big Baby” Davis instead.
THE MIRACLE
Williams thrives in this new environment, and learns from Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace what type of work it takes to be an NBA impact player. By being surrounded with championship-caliber players in a superior basketball system, he plays to his eighth overall pick potential.
THE HARSH REALITY
We’ll likely put a man on Mars before Williams has any sort of NBA impact. Good thing he married well.

Against the GState Warriors in on of the last games of the season S. Williams poured in 5 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, a block and 3 assists. He’s gonna make it tough for some of the teams in the East with lines like that backing up Brian Scalabrine, who I might mention is one of he most undervalued big men in the game. And he can shoot!
Long live the career of Devon George!
P.S. Adam Sedie, can you still ball? If so, wouldn’t you say your game is a little bit Shelden Williams/Brian Scalabrine?
Whoa now. I take the compliment in the Scalabrine, but decline the insult with the Sheldon Williams line.
I got me an offensive game, and read the passing lanes like Shakespeare.
I would consider accepting Williams’ leaping ability and height, but nothing else.
I contemplated changing my last name to Scalabrine.
Well, not really. I believe I would need curly red hair to do so.
What is Shelden’s problem? I thought he was a good ballplayer. It’s hard being shuffle from one place to another
I honestly do not think Sheldon has managed to adapt to the life in the pros for some reason. Also, I think he has limited athleticism. If you see him run the floor, it is not a pretty sight.
The other blaring issue is the NBA pace seems too fast for him. Sometimes it takes players longer than others to adapt.
This being his 4th year,I am starting to believe he is just never going to.
